Welcome to FreedomBox, Personal Server

!FreedomBox is a personal server that protects your privacy. It hosts on demand applications such as file sharing, shared calendering, instant messaging, secure voice conference calling, blog and wiki. !FreedomBox is a free software stack, a subset of the Debian universal operating system, that can be installed in many flavors of cheap and power-efficient hardware. The simplicity of setting up and operating a !FreedomBox is similar to that of a smart phone. Continue reading a general introduction, the full list of applications currently provided by !FreedomBox or our last [at SFLC conference].

Leaving The Cloud

Download FreedomBox now to get started! You may either use it on one of the supported hardware, install it on a Debian operating system, or deploy on a virtual machine. Installing on Debian is easy because FreedomBox is available as packages. On hardware, you may need a little bit of technical expertise to setup. What we are requiring is to buy a device and plug in an SD card. In case of trouble, please read and interact with the Questions and Answers page based on [[1]] mailing list archives.

Get Involved

We would like to have a version 1.0 soon. We target including some of the translation work in a 0.7 release for November 27th (Thanksgiving release). If you wish to see FreedomBox available for one of your languages, please start a discussion on the FreedomBox discuss mailing list. We are targeting mid January for a 0.8 release. The main focus of the 0.8 release is going to be integrated in the PGP based SSL Client authentication work. We are planning on a 0.9 polish release for late February with general usability improvements. Our next progess call is scheduled for Saturday, November 14th, 2015, 2 PM UTC. Join us!
